Vaangana Vanakamna ,
From the beginning man was busy finding a way to communicate with
his fellow beings.
Starting from signs- signals-alphabets-pigeon post-telephone-
telegraph.
Then came the giants-Internet and Mobile phones.
People now “Chat” without
opening their mouths. :p
Thats when the smileys became a popular culture. A smiley is a human face , intially made with the keybaord keys. It then emerged into yellow faces , with black eyes and mouth. Now there are wide range of smileys apart from the faces.
The basic ones are :-) and :-(
The smiley was said to be documented first by a computer scientist ,Scott Fahlman in the year 1982. He called them "joke markers"

I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:
:-)
Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark
things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use
:-(
Now it has become a necessary feature. All chat application come with the smileys.
WhatsApp has a wide range of smileys. FB has recently introduced new smileys and a feature "Feeling" through which you can update your current mood with smileys.
Some people find the use of smileys unnecessary, as the language itself is sufficient enough.
But with today's scenario, we hardly get to chat face to face with everyone. When that is the case. Smileys help us avoid misunderstandings.
For eg: I type " get lost"
and then "get lost :p :p"
The second one gives a clear picture of my tone.
It has so become part of our communication that when my friend Nisha chats without a smiley,I ask "why so serious :O , Are you ok"
ha ha , he he,OMG,LOL,ASAP,ROFL,BRB,GM,GN,TC - are the internet slangs which have also become an equal part of our chat conversations.
Some people overuse the smileys,some dont use at all. It depends on their personal interests.
However it is considered unprofessional.You better not use it in your mails , unless you have a supercool boss :p
The number of smileys keep increasing as people sharpen their
creativity..
Few of the them :
d(-_-)b - Wearing headphones
}|{ - butterfly
C=:-) - that's a chef
*<<<<+ - Chrristmas Tree
(=^_^=) - Cat
(\(\
( -.-)
o_(")(") -Bunny
~~~~8} - Snake
<(")- Penguin
